When we think of farms and fresh vegetables we think of the huge plots in the outskirts of the cities. However, Farm One in New York City has revolutionized the concept of farming completely through scientific research and innovation. They made it possible for passionate chefs and restaurants across the city to get access to healthy and fresh farm produce without any delay by creating a 1500 square feet farm set up in the basement of a building within the city itself.

They grow around 500 different types of plants, keeping in mind the special demands of the chefs. Since the set up is made by them, they have full control over the optimum environment the plants need to grow properly and also the nutrients they need. They handle all the parameters in way that would give them the right plants with the exact features like size, colour and shape which are demanded by the customers.

The seeds are planted in recycled coconut husks that allows them to derive nutrients as well as space to grow roots. Also, these plants are placed in raft like structures over water which helps the roots to suck in the moisture and grow correctly.

Moreover vertical farms like these use a lot less water compared to traditional ones since the system is created to recycle the water. They don’t use pesticides and instead allow beneficial insects like ladybugs to feed on the plants. Lack of pesticide also allows people to eat the plants directly with no need of cleaning them.

Rob Laing, the creator of Farm. One, got the inspiration for a farm like this in 2015. He was a culinary student and during those days he came across several exotic plants and vegetables that are difficult to find and so it motivated him to create a healthy set up like this to make these ingredients available to all. The products are sold on the day of their harvest, which are then delivered through subway or bikes as fast as possible. Most of their customers are half an hour away from the outlet.

All these ingredients are grown based on the criteria sent in by the chefs like the leaf shape and size which Farm. One produces in batches for them. These chefs are very impressed with this system as it allows them to create the best dish with the healthiest ingredients. Earlier these chefs had to order stuff from California or Mexico which needed to be packaged carefully to keep them fresh. These extra packaging measures created more waste. Farm. One’s unique technique of production has reduced expenses on both sides.

Having witnessed such a great success of his venture, Laing wishes to expand this business to several other major cities and is of the opinion that their resourceful and technologically advanced system can be utilised in different ways. Although they produce unique plants, the system makes them less expensive and he hopes his innovation will lead to more farming ventures in cities in the future.

America’s first all-organic fast food restaurant, The Organic Coup, is expanding rapidly by avoiding GMOs, pesticides and antibiotics – June 10, 2017

(Natural News) When Erica Welton and Dennis Hoover founded the first certified organic fast food restaurant in the country, they were so intent on taking the fast food industry by storm that they decided to name it The Organic Coup. The takeover is now in full swing as their two locations grew into nine in just a year, with plenty more on the horizon. As they prepare to open their first location at an NFL stadium and their first tech cafeteria, they have their sights set next on Disneyland, Las Vegas, and eventually the whole world. How’s that for a coup?

A “Silent Pandemic” of Toxic Chemicals is Destroying Our Children’s Brains, Experts Warn – May 31, 2017

Having lived in a variety of cultures and regions around the world over the years, I find the differences compared to the United States quite fascinating. Some have an orientation that borders on brilliance, others leave me scratching my head wondering, “Now why would they do that?”

One country in particular stands out in my mind as inspiring on many levels: the Republic of Georgia. Granted, there were aspects that were difficult, but at the end of the day, what truly impressed me was the sheer intelligence of the people. I found Georgians generally to be some seriously sharp people, to the point where I began to feel a bit slow in comparison.

While their education is certainly more rigorous than what you usually find in the United States, I began to suspect something else was at play with their level of intelligence — beyond genetics or cultural leanings. Then one day I was chatting with my friend Tornike about how Georgian produce was the best I’ve ever tasted, anywhere. It was a far-cry from anything I’ve found in North America, even at organic farmer’s markets. Tornike pointed out that everything was grown “traditionally” — meaning no pesticides, chemicals or GMOs. It was also only of heirloom stock and grown within a few miles of our town, Batumi. Healthy soil rich with compost was the norm. And while their water supply is disinfected with chlorine, they do not add fluoride…

A New Flatpack Garden From Ikea Can Feed An Entire Neighbourhood – March 13, 2017

There are some that believe growing our own food is the single most important thing one can do to take back the power and opt out of our corrupt system. Others prefer to grow their own food to avoid mass-produced, genetically modified produce laden with chemical pesticides, and others just like the benefit of getting…

America’s First Certified Organic Fast Food Chain Is Here — and It Pays $16 an Hour!

(ANTIMEDIA) As fast food chains like Jack in the Box and McDonald’s fight to stay afloat, a new fast food chain is challenging fundamental norms within the industry. Organic Coup is the first USDA-certified organic fast food chain in the country, offering previously unheard of healthy options and boasting formidable funding with ambitious plans to expand rapidly across the country.

Touting its organic certification, Organic Coup explains its standards, which “do not allow Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), toxic chemicals and pesticides, or the use of antibiotics or added hormones in livestock.”

Their small but savory menu reflects their approach. The two locations currently open for business, both located in Northern California, serve crispy chicken sandwiches fried in organic coconut oil and topped with spicy organic vegetables on an organic bun. The chicken is provided by the popular organic brand, Mary’s Chicken and also comes in wrap and bowl form. Organic Coup offers a variety of organic sauces, as well as chicken tenders on the side.

For dessert, Organic Coup serves organic popcorn drizzled in organic chocolate and caramel (perhaps a more appealing option to health conscious consumers than McDonald’s recent addition of chocolate drizzled fries). They also plan to add organic tater tots and breakfast burritos to the menu.

Though the prices are higher than traditional fast food establishments — the chicken sandwich is $9.99 — Organic Coup focuses on quality rather than price point (it’s also worth noting a comparable crispy chicken sandwich at Chili’s, a popular, non-organic casual dining restaurant, is $8.79).

The company, which just secured funding to open two dozen new storefronts in the next year, openly describes its intention to revolutionize the fast food industry:

“A ‘coup’ is a takeover — and that’s our vision: an organic takeover of the fast food industry. Totally disruptive and bold,” they explain. “The Organic Coup represents a new day and a new attitude about fast food – fast food can be good food.

But Organic Coup also seeks to disrupt the fast food industry in another way.

“We believe in “Team Coup” (our employees) and we are investing in them with a livable wage that sets a new standard in fast food,” their website reads. While fast food employees across the country protest in favor of government-mandated higher wages, Organic Coup is setting its own standards…….
